Originally the Twyford garden had nothing to offer the residing family except a large dominant workshop and overbearing Laurel trees. The client wanted somewhere to sit and enjoy the far reaching views over the large lawn, somewhere to eat and entertain friends and family and a fire pit for warm and cosy evenings.
The Kota brown limestone paving mirrors that of the flooring in the house’s kitchen area, giving that inside-outside feeling. Moreover, the use of the oak sleepers for the retaining walls connects with the oak flooring used throughout the rest of the house. The hand-crafted brick built fire pit is lined with a steel bowl allowing access to the warmth from both the bespoke curved timber bench and individual timber stools.
A simple palette of perennials and grasses interjected with Amelanchia Lamarckii and Hydrangea Paniculata gives a contemporary twist to a conventional cottage garden. Plus a carefully co-ordinated lighting scheme gives an added dimension at night, highlighting specimen plants and giving light to access paths and steps.
